Osteoporosis: DXA Studies

  • Are you over the age of 45?
  • Do you consume three or more caffeine beverages a day?
  • Do you smoke cigarettes?
  • Do you consume low amounts of dairy products?
  • Do you have a family history of osteoporosis?
  • Have you had a fractured bone as an adult?
  • Do you suffer from a thyroid condition?
  • Are you of Caucasian or Asian descent?
  • Do you have a small frame?
  • Do you take steroid medications?
  • Do you frequently drink alcohol?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you could be at risk for osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease that affects more than 25 million Americans every year. It reduces the strength of your bones, causing them to become brittle and prone to fractures. Although both men and women fall victim to osteoporosis, approximately 50% of women over the age of 50 are at risk for an osteoporosis-related fracture.

Early detection is the best way to protect yourself from the debilitating effects of this disease. Colonial Orthopaedics offers on-site bone densitometry testing at our Colonia Heights location. The test is a non-invasive and painless procedure that requires about 15 minutes to conduct while you remain fully clothed and unconfined.

Medial research indicates that only one in four spine fractures are clinically recognized and patients with spine fractures are twice as likely to suffer hip fractures and five times as likely to experience subsequent spine fractures. Utilizing the state-of-the-art IVA technology, our physicians can visually assess spine fractures and better recommend ways to prevent and/or treat these conditions.

If you think you may be at risk for osteoporosis, call Colonial Orthopaedics at (804) 518-1300 to schedule your DXA, or ask your physician if a bone density test is right for you.
